Wednesday is when we look at motorcycle riding destinations

Wednesday is when we look at motorcycle riding destinations. This week, we look at Central New South Wales, Australia, which is easily reached from Sydney.
A motorcycle tour of Central NSW is a fantastic way to explore the region's diverse landscapes, rich history, and charming towns. Here's how I’d plan a memorable trip:

1. Choose a Route
Start with a well-thought-out loop or out-and-back route covering highlights like Bathurst, Orange, Mudgee, Parkes, Dubbo, and the surrounding areas. Central NSW has excellent motorcycling roads featuring rolling hills, twisty sections, and scenic stretches.

2. Must-Visit Stops
Bathurst:
Mount Panorama: Ride the iconic racing circuit (open to public vehicles most days) and soak in the motorsport history.
Abercrombie House: Explore this heritage-listed mansion for a bit of culture.
Orange:
Food and Wine: Stop for a gourmet meal or wine tasting at one of Orange's renowned wineries.
Mount Canobolas: Take a detour to this extinct volcano for stunning views and a bit of adventure.
Mudgee:
Wineries and Breweries are perfect for a relaxed afternoon (park the bike for the night before sampling, of course!).
The Drip Gorge: Enjoy a short hike to this beautiful sandstone rock formation.
Parkes:
Parkes Radio Telescope (‘The Dish’): Visit this iconic site made famous by the movie The Dish.
Elvis Festival: If your trip aligns, don’t miss the annual Elvis Festival in January!
Dubbo:
Taronga Western Plains Zoo: A must-visit for animal lovers. They have a bike-friendly path around the zoo.
Old Dubbo Gaol: Dive into history at this well-preserved 19th-century gaol.
Cowra:
Japanese Garden and Cultural Centre: A serene stop for stunning gardens and history.
Cowra Breakout Site: Learn about WWII history at the site of the infamous POW escape.

3. Roads to Ride
Mid-Western Highway: Smooth and scenic, perfect for relaxed cruising.
Great Western Highway: Enjoy winding mountain roads as you head west from Sydney.
Golden Highway: Connects many towns with fantastic countryside views.
Burrendong Way: A quieter, scenic road between Orange and Wellington.

4. Experiences to Include
Bush Pubs: Central NSW has classic Aussie pubs where you can grab a meal, share a yarn, and enjoy a laid-back atmosphere.
Starry Nights: Camp or find accommodations where you can enjoy the clear night skies of regional NSW.
Farmland Scenery: Stop to take in the patchwork fields, rolling hills, and old windmills—a quintessential rural NSW vibe.

5. Practical Tips
Pack for All Weather: Central NSW can range from sunny and warm to unexpectedly cool, especially in the higher elevations.
Fuel Up: Some stretches between towns can be long, so plan fuel stops carefully.
Local Markets: Check out local farmer’s markets for fresh produce and handmade goods.
Stay Overnight: Towns like Mudgee, Orange, and Dubbo have great accommodations, from heritage hotels to boutique stays.
A Central NSW motorcycle tour is all about the journey, the people you meet, and the stories you'll gather along the way. Whether you're drawn to history, nature, or simply great roads, this region offers an unforgettable ride. Where would you want to start?

Tuesday is when we look for answers.

Tuesday is when we look for answers.

I have been riding and driving around and noticed many riders are not wearing gloves. This got me thinking about gloves.

Wearing motorcycle gloves is crucial for several reasons: they enhance safety, comfort, and overall control while riding. Here's why they matter:

1. Protection in Case of an Accident
Impact and abrasion resistance: When you fall, your hands instinctively hit the ground first. Gloves made of reinforced materials like leather, Kevlar, or hard armour protect your skin from severe abrasions and fractures.
Shock absorption: Many gloves have padding on the palms and knuckles, which helps reduce the impact of collisions.

2. Improved Grip and Control
Grip in all conditions: Gloves improve grip on the handlebars, especially in wet or sweaty conditions, thanks to friction-producing materials.
Vibration dampening: They reduce the fatigue caused by bike vibrations, ensuring better handling during long rides.

3. Weather Protection
Cold weather: In colder climates, gloves insulate your hands, keeping them warm and preventing numbness, which could compromise control.
Rain: Waterproof gloves protect your hands from becoming slippery and cold in the rain, maintaining safety and comfort.
Sun and heat: Gloves shield your skin from sunburn and blisters caused by prolonged exposure to the sun.

4. Enhanced Comfort
Gloves reduce the pressure and strain on your hands during extended rides, minimising discomfort and fatigue.
They also prevent chafing and calluses caused by continuous contact with the grips.

5. Knuckle and Finger Protection
Many gloves include hard armour or padding over knuckles and fingers, guarding against flying debris like rocks, insects, or branches.

6. Style and Visibility
High-visibility gloves can make hand signals more noticeable to other drivers, enhancing safety on the road.
They also add a stylish element to your riding gear, letting you express your personality while staying safe.

Wearing gloves isn’t just about looking the part—it’s critical to staying safe and comfortable on every ride. Whether cruising on an extended tour or commuting, gloves should always be part of your gear.

Thursday and today's tour is Ladakh.

Thursday we look at what tours we operate to yesterday's destination of Ladakh in northern India.

Ladakh is a beautiful region and located at a height of 10,000 feet. It is a Buddhist-dominated area, and it is also called Little Tibet. Ladakh is popularly known as the Land of High Passes and attracts people for its rich Buddhist culture and lovely landscape. It was the crossroads of the ancient trade routes from South Asia, and until the end of the 19th century, mule trains carrying shawls and spices made the journey from Amritsar through Ladakh to Yarkand in China. Ladakh’s people are a mix of Tibetan and Indo-Aryan – it became part of independent India in 1948. Ladakh is a land of extremes; you can see snow-capped mountains and clear blue skies at the same time as arid dunes; azure blue lakes flow alongside some of the highest mountain peaks and road mix of rough and smooth, which makes it undoubtedly the most popular destination for motorcycle tours in India. The thought of a motorcycle ride to Ladakh is not for the faint-hearted, but with a bit of resilient nature and determination, one can easily conquer the ride through the mighty Himalayas, where the terrain is quite uneven; one must be prepared to face umpteen obstacles and challenges. This Adventurous Mighty High Himalayan Motorcycle tour is also known as a high-altitude motorcycle expedition Tour, as you will be staying overnight at a height of 3000 metres to 4600 metres. Of course, you will ride Royal Enfield 500cc Motorcycle to conquer the Highest Motorable road, Khardung-la Pass (17,582 FT), Changla Pass (17,560 FT), Tanglangla Pass (17,480 FT) and all three most popular and beautiful lakes like Pangong Lake, Tsomoriri Lake, and Tsokar Lake with experience of Double Hump Camel Ride in Sand Dunes of Nubra Valley. Riding on the Highest Motorable Road and other high passes in the Himalayas is a lifetime moment for every motorcyclist. We invite all thrill-seeker motorcycle enthusiasts to join our High Himalayan Motorcycle Adventure Tour on Legendary Royal Enfield 500cc Motorbike to test your skills.

Wednesdays are destinations and this week's is Ladakh in Northern India.

Wednesday is the day we look at a Motorcycling destination. This week, it is Ladakh in northern India.

Riding a motorcycle in Ladakh, India, is a bucket-list adventure for many motorcyclists because of its unmatched beauty, unique challenges, and profound freedom. Here’s why it’s so appealing:
Breathtaking Scenery: Ladakh is nestled in the Himalayas, with landscapes that include towering snow-capped peaks, deep valleys, crystal-clear lakes, and arid, moon-like deserts. Riding through places like Pangong Lake, Nubra Valley, and the surreal mountains of Khardung La gives a sense of awe that's hard to replicate anywhere else.
Challenging Terrain: The roads in Ladakh, some of which are among the highest motorable roads in the world, like the passes at Khardung La and Chang La, are rugged, winding, and often unpredictable. This offers an adrenaline rush and a chance to test riding skills against harsh, ever-changing terrain.
Adventure and Self-Discovery: The ride to Ladakh requires endurance and mental resilience. High altitudes, unpredictable weather, and remote stretches make it a physically and mentally demanding journey. Riders often find themselves deeply challenged, creating a sense of self-discovery and personal growth along the way.
Cultural Experience: Ladakh has a distinct culture with Tibetan Buddhist influences. Monasteries, prayer flags, and the warm hospitality of Ladakhi locals make the journey a rich cultural experience, adding depth to the adventure.
Community and Camaraderie: Ladakh is a popular route for motorcycle travellers, drawing riders worldwide. Sharing this incredible journey with others creates bonds and camaraderie, making the experience even more memorable.
For motorcycle enthusiasts, Ladakh offers the perfect blend of adventure, beauty, culture, and personal challenge, making it one of the world’s most epic rides.

Tuesday is the answer-a-question day - Tubed or tubeless tyres?

Tuesday is the answer-a-question day; today’s one came out of our conversation the other day. One of us has two motorcycles, both with tubes.

The choice between tubed and tubeless tyres on motorcycles comes down to differences in wheel design, riding style, maintenance needs, and safety. Each type has pros and cons that can make a noticeable difference depending on where and how you ride.

Tubed tyres
Tubed tyres are common on bikes with spoke wheels, often found on classic, adventure, and off-road bikes. Spoked wheels tend to flex more, giving extra resilience on rough or uneven surfaces, but they can’t be completely airtight. So, a tube inside the tyre holds the air instead.

Advantages of Tubed Tyres
Better on Rough Terrain: The flexibility of spoked wheels combined with tubed tyres makes them ideal for handling bumps and rocks on off-road and adventure rides.
Easier to Repair Flats Off-Road: Tubed tyres can be patched relatively easily with a tube repair kit if you’re off the beaten path.
Cost-Effective: Tubed tyres and spoked wheels are usually cheaper to manufacture and replace, making them a cost-effective option for adventure or classic bikes.

Disadvantages of Tubed Tyres
Heat Build-Up: Tubed tyres can build up heat faster, affecting performance at higher speeds, especially on highways.
Harder to Fix on the Road: While a puncture on a tubeless tyre can sometimes be plugged on the spot, tubed tyres require removing the wheel and tube, which is trickier if you’re not well-equipped.
More Prone to Blowouts: When punctured, a tube can lose air rapidly, which could cause a blowout, especially dangerous at higher speeds.

Tubeless tyres
Tubeless tyres are more common on modern road and sport bikes, typically with cast alloy wheels that are fully sealed to hold air without a tube. This design is well-suited to higher speeds and smoother road surfaces.

Advantages of Tubeless Tyres
Self-Sealing with Small Punctures: Tubeless tyres tend to deflate slowly if you get a small puncture. You can often use a plug kit to temporarily seal the puncture without removing the wheel, a major convenience if you're out on the road.
Less Heat Buildup: Tubeless tyres generally run cooler without the friction of a tube inside, which is better for high-speed riding and longer road trips.
Lower Risk of Blowouts: They’re less likely to fail suddenly since they usually lose air slowly, giving you more control if you do get a puncture.

Disadvantages of Tubeless Tyres
Limited to Certain Wheels: Tubeless tyres require airtight alloy wheels or specific types of sealed spoked wheels, which can be more expensive.
Costlier Repairs if Damaged: While you can patch small punctures, significant damage to a tubeless tyre or alloy wheel can be more expensive to fix or replace than a tube-and-spoke setup.

Which to Choose?
Tubeless tyres are usually better for road-focused riders, especially at high speeds. They offer easy repairs, better heat management, and a lower risk of blowouts. If your rides often take you off-road or on rough terrain, tubed tyres with spoked wheels might offer the rugged durability and flexibility you need.

In short, tubeless tyres are usually better for modern road riding, while tubed tyres hold an edge for off-road versatility and old-school resilience.

Saturday and this time we go back to trip not a tour.

The clock has been wound back to 2005 when we attended the Indian and Victory shop ride.

The Shop allowed interlopers like us Harley riders with the thoughts of us crossing over to the other American V twin. The closure of this shop and subsequent confusion of where the dealers are has not helped.
This was a great ride. It started at the shop, travelled down the coast from Sydney up Macquarie Pass, and then returned via Picton.
